What Happened to American Innovation?

As Americans, we consider ourselves to be at the forefront of innovation compared to the rest of the world. Unfortunately, when it comes to alternative fuels, many countries are way ahead of us. Did you know that there are more than 17 million vehicles powered by propane autogas in the world today? But only about 270,000 of those operate in the United States – that’s less than 2 percent of all passenger vehicles!
Natural gas shale plays are abundant in the United States. These produce 72 percent of the propane supply, which is why the United States is set to export around 5 billion gallons of propane this year, up from 2.5 billion gallons last year. In 2015, we will export more than 10 billion gallons of propane. At the same time, we are importing almost 4 billion barrels of foreign oil, which means we’re sending more than $380 billion American dollars overseas.
What do countries such as South Korea, Poland and Turkey recognize that we don’t?
Some will argue that alternative fuel infrastructure isn’t available, the vehicles aren’t ready, and the technology isn’t advanced enough. Not anymore. We know the answers are here:
- There are more than 2,500 propane autogas stations throughout the United States.
- The wholesale cost of propane is $1.02 per gallon.
- The broadest lineup of dedicated propane autogas vehicles is now available.
There are no more excuses. We need to stop exporting our lower cost and clean energy source to other countries. What do you think they’re using their propane imports for? That’s right, it’s to fuel their vehicles.
